Waisting Away- Our Battle of the Bulges and Some Recent Products

Every time we do a clinic we see the same people whom we meet here in our practices- sincere, disciplined people who reduce caloric consumption, eliminate simple carbohydrates such as sugar, and increase physical activity levels. Yet these same people often seem ‘stalled out’ at a larger body image than they would want, and nothing seems to shrink the waist.

We’ve been listening to what seems to work with this patient or that one and reading research results and theories as to why for so many, weight loss seems so daunting. One common factor that is being discussed is high blood insulin levels, which may prevent our metabolizing stored fat.

I put this to my “friend” in the AI department and found that “he” had the details for us:

“High Insulin Blocks Fat Metabolism

According to various studies and experts, high blood insulin levels can impede fat metabolism in several ways:

  • Insulin’s role in glucose uptake: Insulin facilitates glucose uptake in muscle and fat cells, but when insulin levels are elevated, it can divert glucose away from fat cells, inhibiting lipolysis (the breakdown of stored fat) and reducing the availability of fatty acids for energy production.
  • Inhibition of lipase activity: Insulin can directly inhibit the activity of lipase enzymes, which are responsible for breaking down triglycerides into fatty acids and glycerol. Elevated insulin levels can reduce lipase activity, leading to decreased lipolysis and reduced fat metabolism.
  • Increased fatty acid storage: High insulin levels can promote the storage of fatty acids in adipose tissue, rather than their oxidation for energy. This can lead to increased fat accumulation and decreased fat metabolism.
  • Impaired mitochondrial function: Insulin resistance and high insulin levels can disrupt mitochondrial function in fat cells, reducing their ability to oxidize fatty acids and produce energy.
  • Shift from fat oxidation to glucose oxidation: When insulin levels are high, the body may prioritize glucose oxidation over fat oxidation, even in the presence of adequate fat stores. This can lead to reduced fat metabolism and increased glucose metabolism.

In summary, high blood insulin levels can block fat metabolism by:

  • Diverting glucose away from fat cells
  • Inhibiting lipase activity
  • Promoting fatty acid storage
  • Impairing mitochondrial function
  • Shifting from fat oxidation to glucose oxidation

These mechanisms can contribute to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes, making it challenging to lose weight and maintain weight loss over time.”

If insulin and high blood sugar is part of the resistant obesity problem, are there some herbs which can help us to reverse this? Again, there are several suggested:

“Herbs Lowering Insulin Levels

Based on the provided search results, here are some herbs that may help lower blood insulin levels:

  • Ginger: While ginger did not significantly lower blood insulin levels in the reviewed studies, it may still have potential benefits in reducing inflammation and improving insulin sensitivity.
  • Aloe vera: Research suggests that aloe vera may help slow the progress of type 2 diabetes by protecting and repairing pancreatic beta cells, which produce insulin. It may also lower fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin A1C levels.
  • Cinnamon: Cinnamon has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood glucose levels after meals. It may also increase insulin secretion and reduce cravings for sweets.
  • Fenugreek: Fenugreek seeds and extracts have been traditionally used to treat diabetes. Research suggests that fenugreek may help lower blood glucose levels and improve insulin sensitivity.
  • Gymnema Sylvestre:  The Gymnemic acid compounds can attach to the walls of the intestine and reduce the sugar absorption rate in the gut. Thus, helping in the reduction of blood sugar levels and the promotion of insulin production and release. However, there still is a lack of data regarding the anti-diabetic properties of the plant. The plant’s extract may also help assist with weight loss. For the record, Japan’s total Gymnema consumption in a year is around 50 tons, only because of its weight loss properties. In addition, studies show that a mixture of Gymnema Sylvestre, hydroxy citric acid, and chromium-containing niacin taken through the mouth for eight weeks may help reduce body mass in people who are obese.
  • Barberry (Berberis spp.): Berberine, a compound found in barberry, has been shown to decrease blood sugar and HbA1c levels. It may also have anti-diarrheal and nutrient-dense properties.
  • Curcumin (Turmeric): Curcumin has been found to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels. It may also have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
  • Sage: Research suggests that sage may increase insulin secretion and improve glucose tolerance, potentially helping to lower blood insulin levels.
  • Jamun (Eugenia jambolana): Jamun has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat diabetes. It may help increase insulin secretion and improve glucose tolerance.
  • Oregano: Oregano has been found to inhibit sweet taste receptors, which may lead to reduced cravings for sweets and improved blood sugar control.”

Obesity is a complex phenomenon with many potential causes. The above are simply part of the discussion and research going on about one of the suspected factors, linking it to hyperglycemia and insulin levels that may impede normal fat metabolism.

There are some recent products which seem to offer hope. This is purely anecdotal. People share what has worked for them by lowering appetite, cravings, and helping them to start removing obesity. We are simply passing what we hear along to you because we’re seeing it for for people who share their success stories. This does not automatically mean that the products below will work for you.

Do your own research and then, as we always suggest, discuss these suggestions with a healthcare professional prior to beginning a new supplement regimen.

It is also important to point out that this publication is strictly pro bono, to help you to better manage your own health and not be financially destroyed by excessive use of the mainstream healthcare system. We may suggest a brand or supplier if the item is not commonly available, but it is just a starting place- if you find a better buy and cleared its use, then take advantage of that. We receive no sort of kickback or renumeration for writing about, passing along what patients share with us. Now let’s look at a few of the products that are gaining attention in the fight against obesity.

Lemme capsules

On this site and on the Kardashian site, the following projections are shared. While the goofy graphics are off-putting to a lot of us, I’ve heard good things about the effects which pretty much accord with the below:

“MONTH 2

Reduced hunger:

Participants in a clinical study using Supresa® saffron extract showed 69% decreased hunger and 55% decrease in snacking events in 8 weeks.*

MONTH 3

Increased GLP-1 levels:

Participants in a 12-week clinical study using Eriomin® lemon bioflavonoid complex showed increased GLP-1 levels. Eriomin® also supports healthy blood sugar levels in the normal range.*

MONTH 6

Healthy fat loss:

Participants in a clinical study using Morosil® red orange extract showed a reduction in body weight, visceral fat and hip and waist circumference, in combination with healthy diet and exercise.*”

In some of their literature, it is compared in effectiveness to Ozempic but without the side effects. It appears that this supplement is entirely plant based.

AKG (Alpha Ketoglutaric Acid)

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9067931

“Previously, we found that α-ketoglutaric acid (AKG) stimulates muscle hypertrophy and fat loss through 2-oxoglutarate receptor 1 (OXGR1). Here, we demonstrated the beneficial effects of AKG on glucose homeostasis in a diet-induced obesity (DIO).”

Conclusion: There is no “magic bullet” for fat loss. These three are well-reputed on an anecdotal basis. If any of you try any of these, please use the reply form and let us know about your experience. Most diet supplements take at least several weeks to work, but we shall be awaiting your sharing your experience with other readers.

The above are offered in good will for your own education and a starting point for your own evaluation.
